What a site for physiotherapists has to do

Most people find a physio because something hurts, and they want to see someone soon. They search on a phone, often from the couch, and they are looking for three things: a physio close by, a free time this week and a sense that the person knows what they are doing. The site leads with the booking button and the physios' names.

A smaller group arrive on a referral or for a long-term plan, such as workplace injury, a post-surgery program or Pilates. They read more. Give them pages that explain how treatment is planned, what the rebate rules are and how many visits to expect to discuss. Skip testimonials and promises of recovery, which the advertising rules for health practitioners don't allow.

What the site carries

  • A booking button on every screen, with online booking linked to the real diary where possible.
  • Each physio named, with their qualifications, registration and areas of particular interest.
  • A first-appointment page covering what to wear, what to bring and how long it takes.
  • Which health funds and schemes you can process claims for on the spot, and which need a referral.
  • Pages for the problems people search by name, such as back pain, knee injuries, neck pain and headaches.
  • Sport and workplace injury kept on separate pages, since the people looking for them aren't the same.
  • A plain account of how a treatment plan works, and that the number of visits depends on the person.
  • Fees for a standard first and follow-up appointment, with what is included.
  • Parking, step-free access and the nearest public transport to the front door.
  • A short page for people who have had surgery or an accident, explaining how to book and what to bring from the hospital.

The rules that shape the words

Section 133 of the National Law, which AHPRA enforces, bars testimonials about clinical care, so quotes from patients about their treatment stay off the site.

Claims about results must not be misleading, which rules out guaranteed recovery and any line calling you the best in the area.

Use the title specialist only where the physio holds the registration, because an unearned title is a breach of the advertising rules.

Fees and package deals must show the full price and its conditions, since Australian Consumer Law treats an unclear offer as misleading.

Rules change. Have your licence and wording checked against your regulator before the site goes live.

What goes wrong on older sites

  • Patient stories about recovery, which the health advertising rules bar.
  • Using the title specialist without a registration that supports it.
  • A promise to fix a problem in a set number of visits.
  • Services listed as a wall of text with no booking button beside them.
  • A timetable that doesn't show which physio is in on which day.

Questions from physiotherapists

Can I put patient reviews on a physio website?
Not about clinical care. Section 133 of the National Law bars testimonials about treatment, and a quote about getting back to the gym is one. Show your team, your rooms and your process instead. Your Google profile is a separate matter, and you shouldn't solicit or edit what appears there.
Should I list prices for a first appointment?
Yes, with what the fee covers and what rebate is likely through the health funds you handle. People weigh up cost when they are in pain, and a clear figure saves a call. For packages, show the full price and its conditions.
Is online booking worth setting up?
For a physio practice, usually yes. Many people book after hours or while at work. Link it to the diary so the times are real, show which physio each slot is with, and keep a phone number beside it for people who prefer to talk.
Do I need pages for each condition?
For the ones people search for by name, such as lower back pain or a sprained ankle. Describe what the physio assesses and how treatment generally works. Avoid saying how fast anyone will recover, since every case is different and the rules don't allow that promise.
How do I show I treat sports injuries without overclaiming?
Say which sports and levels you see, whether a physio with a sports interest is on the roster and what a session involves. Mention clubs only if the arrangement is real and current. Skip claims about getting an athlete back to full fitness, which can't be promised.
What about workplace and compensation claims?
Give them their own page. Explain whether you take workers' compensation and transport accident clients, what paperwork the patient should bring and who to ring about it. Employers and insurers search differently from walk-in patients, so a short, clear route for each helps both.
